Restoring a prestigious home and transforming it into a dream that holds its value over time . We discuss this at Villa Metelliano , just outside Cortona , with its owner , the entrepreneur Giuseppe Bonanno , and with the architect Enrico Lavagnino
Giuseppe Salvatore Bonanno , l ’ uomo che “ con i profumi ha conosciuto il mondo ” ( come recita il titolo di una sua intervista al Corriere della Sera ), è il proprietario di un ’ azienda , la Gazebo & Florence , fondata nel 2008 a Verona e oggi leader internazionale nel trading di profumi e cosmetici . Quasi trent ’ anni fa arrivò a Cortona , insieme a sua moglie Vera , in cerca di una casa in campagna da acquistare . “ Avrei voluto che fosse in Valpolicella – confessa – ma Vera fu categorica : se andiamo lì , poi tutti i sabati sei in ufficio ”. E allora via , in Toscana , e l ’ incontro con una delle proprietarie della zona , la signora Fernanda Castaldi : “ Una persona stupenda e di grande cultura ”, ricorda Bonanno , “ restauratrice di case e proprietaria della villa di fronte ”. È il primo acquisto , al quale segue , pochi anni dopo , quello di Villa Metelliano .

“ Di questi luoghi ci ha subito conquistato la tranquillità , unita alla semplicità e a un incredibile concentrato di storia , di sapienza , di cultura ”, spiega Bonanno seduto nel gazebo prospiciente la facciata della settecentesca Villa Metelliano , in pietra antica impreziosita da dipinti dell ’ e- poca napoleonica , perché qui all ’ inizio dell ’ Ottocento transitarono le truppe francesi . Dentro , la pietra dei muri si mescola con i soffitti in legno di castagno , il parquet dai grandi listoni con le decorazioni floreali realizzate a mano su ispirazione dell ’ artista britannico William Morris ; il tutto illuminato dal sole che attraversa le grandi vetrate affacciate sul giardino . Fuori dalle vetrate , un silenzio e una flora quasi irreali : ulivi , prati verdi e fiori colorati e profumati ovunque . Una specie di isola senza il mare ma con una piscina a sfioro , armoniosamente incastonata nel verde circostante . In verità , quando fu acquistata , Villa Metelliano era chiusa da tempo , e dunque del tutto inadeguata a essere subito riabitata . Giuseppe Salvatore Bonanno , the man who “ discovered the world through perfumes ” ( as the title of his interview with the Corriere della Sera states ), owns Gazebo & Florence , a company founded in 2008 in Verona and now an international leader in the perfume and cosmetics trade . He arrived in Cortona almost thirty years ago with his wife Vera , looking to buy a house in the countryside . “ I would have liked it to be in Valpolicella ,” he confesses , “ but Vera was categorical : if we go there , then you ’ ll be in the office every Saturday .” And so away to Tuscany , where he met one of the local owners , Fernanda Castaldi : “ A wonderful and highly cultured person ,” recalls Bonanno , “ who restored houses and owned the villa opposite .” This was the first purchase , followed a few years later by that of Villa Metelliano .

“ The tranquillity of these places won us over immediately , together with the simplicity and an incredible concentration of history , wisdom and culture ,” explains Bonanno , sitting in the gazebo overlooking the facade of the eighteenth-century Villa Metelliano , made from ancient stone embellished with paintings from the Napoleonic era , since French troops passed through here in the early nineteenth century . Indoors , the ancient stone of the walls combines with the chestnut wood ceilings and the broad parquet flooring with handcrafted floral decoration inspired by the British artist William Morris ; all lit up by the sun that pours through the large windows facing the garden . Outside the windows is an almost unreal silence and flora : olive trees , green lawns and fragrant colourful flowers everywhere . A kind of island without the sea , but with an infinity pool surrounded by greenery . In truth , when it was purchased , Villa Metelliano had been shut up for some time and was therefore completely uninhabitable .
