Across the nation, pgn members are rallying around causes that matter. members are changing the communities they live in and providing moral and monetary support to the brothers who hold these causes dear. here's a look at just a few events that took place this year.
TOP LEFT: balls for balls is a meatball eating competition hosted by the delta lambda chapter from the university of pennsylvania that raises money for prostate cancer research. according to the american cancer society, prostate cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in american men, behind only lung cancer. about 1 in 36 men will die of prostate cancer.
TOP RIGHT: the pgn members at washington university of st. louis spent time volunteering at the animal protective association of missouri. the non-profit organization is dedicated to bringing people and pets together, advancing humane education, and creating programs beneficial to the human and animal bond. the humane society of the united states estimates that animal shelters care for 6-8 million dogs and cats every year in the united states, of whom approximately 3-4 million are euthanized.
BOTTOM: this year marks the fifth annual compete for a cure event, hosted by the beta pi chapter at the university of illinois. the event was started to honor the mother of phi gamma nu member, dustin stern, whose mother passed away from lung cancer. together the chapter continues to celebrate her memory. this year, they raised over $20,000 for the american lung association. watch the video recap here.
according to the american lung association, lung cancer is the leading cancer killer in both men and women in the united states. in 1987, it surpassed breast cancer to become the leading cause of cancer deaths in women.
