L ’ accoglienza al primo binario della stazione di Siena è di quelle che fanno pensare alla festa , con tanto di orchestrina – tromba , sassofono , fisarmonica e una specie di piccola batteria portatile – che allieta chi deve partire . Abbigliamento e zainetti sono quelli dei giorni nostri , ma basta guardare i vagoni lì in attesa per capire che il viaggio è soprattutto nel tempo . La macchina infatti , che sbuffa vapore come i treni disegnati da bambino di chi bambino non è più da un pezzo , è del 1911 , mentre le carrozze sono di dieci o vent ’ anni più tardi , e hanno dunque un ’ età che si aggira intorno al secolo . Portato molto bene , perché i sedili di legno dell ’ interno sono lustri di coppale e tutto è in ordine , ma lo stesso i materiali richiamano un ’ epoca in cui nelle nostre vite c ’ era molta meno plastica di adesso . Il vecchio treno è chiamato “ centoporte ”, per come è fitto di ingressi e finestrini , e ha carrozze marroni e verdi . Le seconde , ci racconteranno tra un po ’, erano soprattutto adibite al traffico militare . “ Tradotte ”, per dirla con il lessico dell ’ epoca , in cui è possibile immaginare soldati stracchi che riposano perfino nei vani portabagagli , da cui sporgono le gambe a penzoloni . L ’ atmosfera di oggi però , e meno male , è tutto il contrario che bellica . Appare festoso , e d ’ epoca , pure il fischio che prelude alla partenza del treno , il cui nome per esteso è Treno Natura della Val d ’ Orcia . “ In carrozza : si parte ”, urlato dal capotreno , sarebbe il corollario verbale preciso per la situazione , ed è probabile che risuoni lo stesso nella mente di parecchi fra gli oltre trecento viaggiatori .
Interni straordinari , ma lo spettacolo è fuori Una volta a bordo , specie dopo che il treno si è messo in moto con quel suo antico rumore ritmico che man mano si fa più serrato , arriva ai sensi una prima cosa , ovvia e fondamentale .

The welcome on platform one at Siena station has all the hallmarks of a party , complete with a small orchestra – trumpet , saxophone , accordion and a kind of small portable drum kit – to lift the hearts of those saying their farewells . The clothes and backpacks might be from today , but you only need to look at the carriages waiting there to realise that this will be quite simply a journey in time . In fact , the locomotive , which puffs out steam like the trains designed as a child by someone who is no longer a child , dates from 1911 , while the carriages are from ten or twenty years later , and are therefore around a century old . It wears its years well , because the wooden seats in the interior are lustrous and everything is in order , but still the materials recall a time when there was much less plastic in our lives . The old train is called a centoporte ( 100 doors ) because it is so densely packed with doors and windows , and it has carriages coloured brown and green . These trains , they will tell us in short order , were mainly used for military traffic . “ Tradotte ” ( troop trains ), to put it in the language of the time , in which it is still possible to imagine ragged soldiers resting everywhere , even in the luggage compartments , with their legs dangling down over their fellows . But today ’ s atmosphere , I am very happy to say , is anything but warlike . Even the whistle that signals the departure of the train – the Treno Natura della Val d ’ Orcia – sounds festive and vintage . There ' s a shouted response from the conductor – “ all aboard : we ’ re off ” – and the train starts to move , the sounds and sensations resonating in the hearts of the more than three hundred travellers .
