Another frame from Il giardino dei Finzi Contini ( 1970 ) vive una famiglia ebrea dell ’ alta borghesia ferrarese , che non può più frequentare il circolo di tennis cittadino . Sono gli amici , dunque , ad andare in villa per ritrovarsi con Alberto e Micol ( Helmut Berger e Dominique Sanda ), fratello e sorella , e dedicarsi al tennis , perché lì c ’ è un campo , e alla vita , che quando si è giovani preme da dentro , anche se fuori c ’ è guerra e morte . Riconoscibile in molti scorci , tra cui il noto Palazzo dei Diamanti , Ferrara è anche l ’ ultima parola del film . Ed è proprio la tragedia , il senso incolmabile di perdita , ad accentuare il fascino dei luoghi . Può essere molto bello andarsene in giro a ritrovarli , avendo magari nella memoria le atmosfere del film . “ Con tutto quello che succede – dice il protagonista ( Lino Capolicchio ) – mi sento ridicolo con le mie pene amorose ”, e proprio questo è il punto : il contrasto struggente tra l ’ incombenza della guerra , del male , e l ’ immane , potenziale bellezza del godersi la vita . Ed è esattamente questo il gioco che stiamo provando a giocare : piccola danza di luoghi e pellicole ispirata al piacere di godersi la vita . Con il cinema , i sapori , la passione , la bellezza inarrivabile di luoghi unici . Con il tennis , perfino .
Dalla Sicilia al mondo , e ritorno Manca giusto il tennis , ma c ’ è tanta bellezza , e tantissima passione , anche in Nuovo Cinema Paradiso , il film che abbiamo scelto come conclusione , per ora , di questo petit tour tra luoghi d ’ Italia in cui si sono battuti grandi ciak , sapendo però che si tratta di un assaggio , e che potremo riprenderlo . Stavolta siamo in Sicilia , come è noto , giacché l ’ Oscar vinto dal film che ha reso grande Giuseppe Tornatore non è che il più rilucente della lunghissima serie di premi conquistati da questo atto d ’ amore – ricambiato – per la settima arte . La località che ospita i fatti si chiama Giancaldo e , così come la Mongibello di Mr . Ripley , non esiste , anche se porta il nome della montagna che sovrasta Bagheria , città natale del regista . Le location sono in realtà soprattutto a Palermo e provincia , tra cui una memorabile arena estiva , sul Molo Vecchio di Cefalù , in cui parte del pubblico guarda il film dalle barche . Sicilia , nella sua quintessenza . C ’ è dunque il mare , ovviamente , e sin dalla prima inquadratura . C ’ è la natura dell ’ isola , la sua architettura , la sua luce unica al mondo . Ci sono pratiche antiche , memorie d ’ infanzia , gesti che non esistono altrove , come mangiare un ’ insalata sopra una foglia di fico d ’ India , e soprattutto la lotta senza esclusione di colpi tra la nostalgia e la tentazione di combatterla . This is Il giardino dei Finzi Contini ( The Garden of the Finzi-Continis ), directed by the great Vittorio De Sica in his later years . This time it is Italy telling its own story , in one of the most painful periods of its recent history : the horror of the notorious racial laws . The garden of the title is that of the splendid villa where an upper middle-class Jewish family lives in Ferrara , where they have now been banned from using the city ’ s tennis club . So friends go to the villa to see brother and sister Alberto and Micol ( Helmut Berger and Dominique Sanda ) to play tennis on the court there , and to cling to life with the tenacity of youth , even if outside there is war and death . Ferrara itself is recognisable in many vistas , including the famous Palazzo dei Diamanti , and is in fact the very last word spoken in the film . And it is specifically that tragedy , the overwhelming sense of loss , that accentuates the charm of the locations used . It would be wonderful to wander through the city and find those places , perhaps with the spirit and atmosphere of the film alive in your memory . “ With all that ’ s going on ,” says the protagonist ( Lino Capolicchio ), “ I feel ridiculous with all my love woes ,” and this is precisely the point : the poignant contrast between the impending war , the growing evil , and the immense , potential beauty to be found in enjoying life . And that is exactly what we ’ re trying to do : a brief dance of places and films inspired by the pleasure of simply enjoying life . Through cinema , the flavours , the passion and the unattainable beauty of unique places . And even through tennis .
From Sicily to the world , and back again Tennis is missing in this one , but there is so much beauty , and so much passion , in Nuovo Cinema Paradiso , the film we have chosen to conclude – for now – this short tour of these wonderful places in Italy where such great scenes have been filmed . But we close our cinema travel diary in the knowledge that this is merely a taster , and that we will be back to continue this journey . This time we are in Sicily , which we all know , because the Oscar won by the film that made the great Giuseppe Tornatore a legend is merely the most glittering in a very long series of awards won by this love letter to cinema .
