SOCIETY AND CHANGE

Greta Thunberg ’ s actions have certainly shown us all that children can be effective ambassadors for change . This course aims to engage and excite Year 7 students with an introduction of different ways to make a positive difference in the world , all through simple projects designed to get them thinking critically and empathetically about improving the lives of others , while gaining experience of action .
Students will start by exploring what is meant by social leadership and advocacy . We explore issues that matter to them and seek to empower students to face these challenges from a place of action rather than anxiety . As students will no doubt be involved in fundraising activities in the future , we also want to ensure that our students think critically about their giving , exploring the concept of effective philanthropy . Through their own independent investigations , students will explore different ways to demonstrate that charities supported have sustainable outcomes , placing community voice and dignity at the heart of the approach .
We then discuss , and put into practice , different approaches to social action . Students will have the opportunity to learn about social entrepreneurship and create their own product or service that effects positive social change , before reflecting on its effectiveness . Students also set up an awareness project , highlighting an issue to the school community that they believe is worthy of more attention .
