The Real Fool
Spencer Monaco
Darkness falls on our suburban town.
There’s dirt on my mirrors, and a circus in the park.
The real clowns are out there, but we stay inside.
We watch you sleeping,
and we know when you cry.
A hundred times said, but never understood:
I would love you, I would love you. I would.
A hundred times lost, but now starting to return.
I would love you, I would love you if I could.
Silence of passing time haunts the happiness I don’t have.
There’s a hole in my heart in the shape of a knife.
The first time I felt it was also the last;
Don’t lie to me anymore.
A clock on the wall reads a quarter past five.
I’m much too gone to care about time.
The man down the hall is higher than high;
they tell me he’s no good.
A hundred times said, but never understood,
I would love you if I could.
