4 • FROMTHEEDITOR PROUD SPONSORS OF THIS PAGE With the festive season ‘the most wonderful time of the year’ for burglaries, retailers requiring extra safes and security systems for Christmas, people rushing around so losing keys and locking themselves out, plus long, dark nights providing the perfect reason to upgrade CCTV and access control systems; there certainly seems to be no slowing down in December. » » BUT, KEEPING BUSY IS A nice problem, especially for the self-employed, who hopefully get to reap the rewards of extra work. Whatever size of outfit we work in, December is also the natural time to take a look back on the past 12 months and start thinking of the next. For me, as I started working on Lockex in November 2017 and took over from Pat in Spring 2018, the past 12 months have been very exciting. One of the best parts of working on this magazine is getting to see all the hard work at every level, from the innovation of new products to the final fit. I’ve had the pleasure of visiting factories, test labs, and showrooms up and down the country in 2018. And, whether it has been a tiny company with just a handful of employees or a huge, international corporation, I am never failed to be impressed by the dedication of people in this industry, and the ‘craft’ of locksmith-ing. Something that hasn’t been far from the news pages in 2018, is the subject of fire safety. The crossover between it and security has seen many fire safety features in The Locksmith Journal and its sister publication Clearview. That’s why the final issue of the year features a Fire Safety Extra section with more innovations from the industry, tips, and advice, to help keep our homes, businesses, and loved ones safe. Meanwhile, the ever- popular Auto Locksmith supplement makes a comeback (and Santa if you’re reading, you may find this useful if you need an extra set of sleigh keys!) All that’s left to say, from all the team is we wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. The January/February will be extra special for, as well as ringing in the new year, we will be celebrating our 10th birthday, so please get in touch if you’d like to contribute an article. We’d especially like to hear from any other companies celebrating a 10-year anniversary in 2019. Until then, Happy Holidays and I’ll see you on the other side. Gemma, Editor LOCKSMITHJOURNAL.CO.UK | NOV/DEC 2018 Sponsored by ABUS Secure smart standards » » THE NEW TS621:2018 standard, created by the Door and Hardware Federation, has been adopted as the recognised standard for smart locks by the British Standard Institute (BSI), and has received the coveted Kitemark status. The Conexis® L1 from Yale is the first ever smart lock to adhere to the new standard, undergoing rigorous testing in terms of quality, durability, as well as both mechanical and electronic attack testing. In order to comply with the new standard, smart locks must meet mechanical security requirements, as per traditional British Standard locks. These tests include the PAS24:2016 attack testing and the TS007 3-star cylinder attack test. For added safety, Kitemark approved smart locks also require a mechanical release on the inside of the door, that doesn’t require electronics, to ensure an easy escape in the event of a fire. The new electro-mechanical part of the standard requires the smart lock to be attacked by MLA locksmiths, to ensure it cannot be manipulated and compromise the security of the lock. Finally, the electronic hacking tests are designed to test the electronic security of the lock to ensure it is secure against all relevant hacking methods. This standard will provide consumers with the much- needed reassurance that smart locks are now recognised by the British Standards Institute and will easily identified by the trusted Kitemark symbol. Josh Waites, smart locks product manager for Yale, explains: “We are very proud that the Conexis® L1 is the first ever smart lock to receive Kitemark status, making it an unrivalled product within the current smart lock market. “The new standard will provide homeowners with the peace of mind that they can enjoy the convenience and lifestyle benefits of a smart lock, without having to compromise on the safety and security of their home in any way.” For more information on British Kitemark approved smart locks please visit: www.yale.co.uk
