At the time of writing, the next General Election is just a week away, the outcome of which will determine the terms of our exit negotiations from the EU. What form it will take and what impact it will have on the industry remains unknown.

DOUGLAS MASTERSON, Technical Manager at the Guild of Architectural Ironmongers and UK Expert for the European Task Group TG7 EN 1906, points out that, despite this political and economic upheaval, we will remain a member of the European Union for at least the next two years and until withdrawal agreement is negotiated, the legal situation today on European standards remains the same. Read his up-to-date report on some of the most influential security standards for both doors and locking devices on page 54.
As well as political influences, standards also evolve in line with new technology and increasing awareness of the threats posed to home security. Since the publication of SS 312 Diamond in late 2010, several subtle changes have been made. On page 60, the Master Locksmith Association( MLA) provides an update for 2017 on the SS 312 specification for cylinders.
Also in this issue, with IFSEC International just on the horizon, our IFSEC feature beginning on page 61, previews some of the companies set to exhibit.
Taking place in London from 20th to 22nd June 2017, the exhibition provides access to over 10,000 security solutions, live product demonstrations, and networking with over 27,000 security professionals, covering every aspect of security, from access control and video surveillance to smart buildings, cyber, border control and so much more.
Our 13-page special feature, from page 29 onwards, is on Door Closers and Hinges, with the important things you need to know when choosing the right product for a variety of applications, including new products news and case studies.
Finally, in response to requests from our subscribers for information on Disability Compliance in multiple occupancy and commercial properties, we have a dedicated an article to it on page 50, where Simon Osborne, commercial leader of Allegion in UK & Ireland, highlights what locksmiths need to know, best practice and design guidance.
