How did Will Burke get into Locksmithing ? Well , this story is an unusual story , Will being a previous MMA champion , nowadays he can be found picking locks in the north west instead of fights . To most this seems a rather unusual career change , so we followed-up this story to find out more …
How did you go from fighting to locksmithing ?
In 2010 I actually retired from fighting and shortly after I opened a Brazilian Jiu-jitsu and Mixed Martial Arts gym to coach others in the sport . Over the next few years , in between coaching and running the gym , I got quite obsessed with learning to pick locks after a group of kids waiting to start a class brought in picks and practice locks . This is how I was introduced to ‘ Locksport ’, the practice of picking locks .
I grew up on James Bond and Rubik ’ s cubes , and am always looking for new things to learn , so I was hooked immediately . My lockpicking hobby had begun ! I started with practice locks and a cheap set of picks , and then started buying bags of keyless cylinders from Ebay .
There were a lot of resources on YouTube for aspiring lockpickers so I learned a lot online . I remember spending about two months trying to get my first real lock open . Over the next couple of years , I learned more about the various types of locks and eventually got interested in the inner workings , learning basic tasks such as re-pinning locks .
