Key Safe vs Key Box
» KEY SAFES ARE INVALUABLE, BUT only when they are secure – and believe it or not, many cheap key boxes on the market, are not. With so many options available, and often conflicting advice around security and placement choosing the right one can seem like a minefield. Secured by Design spoke to one of its trusted member companies, The Key Safe Company, to help provide expert guidance and advice.
Key Safe A key safe is independently attack tested and accredited, typically certified by LPCB and approved under Secured by Design. Manufactured from hardened steel or heavy-duty alloy, it is designed for external installation and supplied with secure masonry fixings.
Key Box
A key box is usually a low-cost, untested product designed primarily for convenience rather than security. Many are made from thin metal or lightweight alloy with inadequate fixings, making them suitable only for internal or low-risk applications.
Products without independent attack testing should not be considered secure.
Accreditation Matters The Key Safe Company recommends products carrying LPCB certification and Secured by Design approval, confirming the product has undergone independent attack testing.
Its police preferred range is tested to LPS 1175 Issue 8, aligning with standards used for doors and windows. The ark Tamo range
currently holds the highest LPCB rating for push-button mechanical key safes.
Installation Best Practice
A key safe is only as secure as its installation. Best practice is to fit the unit to a solid masonry wall using security fixings suitable for external use. Timber fences, cladding and plasterboard should be avoided, and key safes should not be installed directly onto front doors.
While some customers prefer concealed locations, hidden positioning can reduce visibility if an attack is attempted. In most cases, the priority should be installing a properly accredited product at a practical access point.
