The Bread and Butter: Car Keys
About 75 % of my work is automotive. GM and Ford are most common vehicles here in Florida, but I’ m seeing more BMWs and Audis too. The thing is, European cars are more complex, and there’ s a bit of a knowledge gap between the US and European markets. I’ m trying to learn more and if anyone’ s got resources or courses on high-end European vehicles, I’ m interested.
Here’ s a typical week for me. On average, I do around two car key jobs a week, three commercial, and one or two general locksmith calls. The money’ s decent, approx. $ 150 to $ 200 for a key, but you’ ve got to stay sharp on your pricing. Some jobs are quick; others are a nightmare. It’ s about taking the rough with the smooth.
Looking Ahead
My goal? Grow the business, I would like to hire two apprentices and expand my coverage. There’ s opportunity out there, but you’ ve got to have the manpower and coverage to take it. I want to specialise more in high-end automotive. If I can lock that in( pun
intended), I can increase revenue and maybe even take a holiday for once.
For now, I stick local. Big family, tight crew. We hang out, grab food, relax when we can. I’ ve never been to the UK, but I’ d love to visit London one day. I’ ve heard the locksmith scene is just as competitive as here and yeah, everyone’ s stuck in traffic here too.
But here’ s the thing: even on the toughest days, I’ m doing what I love. I’ m helping people, solving puzzles, and building something that’ s mine. That’ s what makes it all worth it.
Interest in European Automotive
I’ m looking to register my interest in any upcoming courses focused on European vehicles.
If you’ re running a course or know of any reputable training providers offering this type of specialist training, please get in touch. I’ d appreciate any leads or recommendations.
