ew York Times bestselling author April Henry came to visit several EPISD middle schools during the week of Oct 31 – Nov 4. Her week began Monday, October 31 with a visit to Magoffin MS. In the morning, Mrs. Henry gave two writing workshops in the library. The 8th grade English teachers had students write scary stories and the winners participated in a writing workshop with her. Mrs. Henry then joined the students for lunch who had purchased her book, and took photos with the students, signed books, and held a Q&A session with the kids. She even had a special one on one session with one of our students who is blind, and got feedback about how the student felt about the book Girl Stolen as well as talking to her in-depth about seeing-eye dogs and other “tips and tricks” that she learned while doing research for her book. After lunch, Ms. Henry spoke to the student body about her experiences as a writer as well as how she goes about doing research for her books. The research included learning about an urban survival class, visiting a school for the blind, and participating in the Writer’s Police Academy. Many of the students that I spoke with afterwards were surprised to find out that research could be so fun.
