Rockets Library Cyber Café

he Irvin Rocket Library has gone through a multitude of transformations this school year, but the biggest one is that the Irvin Rocket Library Café was launched! The smell of freshly brewed coffee wafted its way into the library and down the halls in March and has remained a popular highlight in the mornings. The Rocket baristas (the library staff, along with student volunteers) brew the java in the mornings, and then students generously fill their cups with the bold and earthy flavor. After preparing their drink to their liking, they saunter over to the seated areas of the library to enjoy their refreshing java jolt with their friends.

Teachers are also welcome to get a quick serving of the Colombian beans. They have noticed that their students are more alert during first period. “I saw my student’s eyes for the first time this semester!” was one comment.

In addition to coffee, our Reference Area was transformed into the new cyber café, where students charge their devices for the day. Students also read magazines in this area, along with perusing our new book area. Some days, students hopped onto the newly created stage area to perform their music or poetry.

Against the beautiful backdrop of Starry Night (an artistic rendition created by the students of Terrace Hills Middle School, under the tutelage of their art teacher, the late Cheryl Burdett), the Irvin Rocket students get the opportunity to share their talents. The coffee is free for everyone who would like some. Next year, a few alternative flavored coffees, along with hot water for tea and cocoa, will be provided to expand the Rockets’ coffee menu.
