reading as we know it . Book readers all over instantly fell for the device and started ordering them by the thousands . In fact , back in 2010 , Amazon announced that they were selling more e-books and Kindles than they were selling hardcopies of the same . So , why was the Kindle the next generation of reading and not just a glorified tablet ?
The Kindle had many major selling points , one of which being the virtual library . Readers could access a lifetime worth of books from the Kindle , and the license provided after its purchase meant that it was all free . E-books are almost instantly obtainable and easily downloadable . The hardcopy counterpart , on the other hand , would take a significant amount of time to obtain , be it from an online store , a bookstore or a library . These
books are also not free , which was hard to compete against the free or severely diminished costs of e-books .
E-books are also easily stored . While a regular book would require a bookshelf or an appropriate place to put it , e-books remove this hurdle by storing your entire library and more into a device that can be held with a single hand . This removes the infamous issue of “ book clutter ” and helps save space in general .
Another huge selling point for the e-book is its portability . A hardcopy book or multiple of them would require a bag of some sort to carry it around . The same cannot be said for the Kindle , as the books are all stored within a device that can be handheld , thus erasing the problem of choosing between books to carry during travel or commute .
The Kindle is also hugely popular for its ease of use . The Kindle allows you to completely and truly customise your reading style ; everything from the font , the brightness , size , language and even transparency . This is impossible to replicate in a book , so people often struggle to read in low-light settings and those with farsightedness often have to get reading glasses to read small font texts .
Now , let ’ s float into the world of wishful thinking . You somehow find the time to curl up in your cozy lawn chair . You have the perfect sunset view with your melt-in-mouth cookies and choice beverage on standby . Soft music playing from the
speakers close by . With your perfect setup complete and your book at the ready , you begin reading . Eventually , the urge to drink your beverage crawls up on you . Ergo , you pick up your drink and reach out to take that first sip , and disaster strikes . Your drink spills all over you and your book , reinforcing the saying , “ All good things must come to an end ”. Perfect evening ruined , right ? Not if you ’ re using a Kindle . With its waterproofing , the Kindle can withstand any spills and unexpected surprises , helping you get back to your book as soon as possible .
Finally , the Kindle is easy to hold . Yes , you read that right . The Kindle ’ s lightweight body and sleek design allows you to hold it in a single hand and allows you extra comfort , as compared to some of the bulkier books that are harder to sit comfortably with .
Epilogue
With all of that said , it cannot be conclusively stated that either one is better than the other . The real takeaway from this should be that reading is all about the experience . It is all about the daydreaming , the sketches , the values , the life lessons , the tears , the laughs , the friends , the knot in your stomach and so much more . Reading a book is all about the journey you go on . It is all about the feelings , the emotions . Reading helps us escape . A book will never judge you .
Reading makes us feel more human , how you feel it is up to you .
