Economic reforms and women ’ s empowerment

in Saudi Arabia

Tessa Maria Prasad [ 9A ]

Women empowerment had always only been a debate topic in Saudi Arabia . Many like to state that the reason it took so long for women to enjoy basic rights like the rights to vote and freedom of speech and liberty that men had taken advantage over for years was because of supposed religious barriers and age old administrative structure . It was under the rule of a new leadership that such ‘ liberal ’ ideologies were taken into operation . It also took the persistent efforts of an army of brave women and some open minded men . Women are now allowed to go to stadiums and concerts and drive , among other things that they are finally free to do now .

The conscious efforts taken by the Saudi government to improve and enhance the quality of life for women and not just men is praiseworthy . Saudi implemented historic reforms to advance women ’ s economic participation too . There are many other restrictions that were lifted that were not mentioned here but are still certainly admirable .
In conclusion I hope that these historic changes can bring about a difference in the day to day lives of Saudi women . I hope many of recognise and consider the sea of opportunities that has been opened for them . I commend the women who strived and toiled to see this day with their own eyes . I anticipate seeing our generation and the generations to come to be whoever they please to be and to not live in a society that requires women to stand back and take in whatever is asked of them . I wish to see change in quality of life for these women and change in the minds of the narrow minded .
