GRADE 8 – 9 PRODUCTION : # CENSORED
The Grade 8 and 9 production took on thought-provoking subject matter in this ensemble-driven drama , where a school art fair becomes embroiled in controversy when a student unveils a divisive painting . Students , parents and teachers must ask themselves tough questions about freedom of speech , appropriateness , what art is supposed to do and the cost of censorship . There was a palpable tension between the intimacy of the performance and the anonymity evoked by the masks used onstage . This dual presence generated questions about the experience of connection and isolation that can be found in community-based settings .
“ I am very interested in makeup … and I wanted to try stage makeup for the first time . I was able to make changes and improve after listening to suggestions from my performer ’ s preferences for the next rehearsal ; she was very happy with the final look .” – Kassie , Grade 10 , Makeup Crew
“ Participating in productions , especially if people are new to the School , really boosts selfconfidence and helps people get to know each other . During rehearsals , we make a ton of mistakes , but no one judges because we are all in the same boat . Rehearsals are another safe and non-judgmental place , if you ever need one .” – Iris , Grade 8 , Actor
