In the Senior School , music courses are part of the Arts and Applied Design Skills & Technologies department . Students can choose both vocal and instrumental music from Grade 8 to 12 , including courses in choral music , concert band and orchestra .
The CHS music team works in a very collaborative manner sharing ideas across grades and specialties , which supports the provision of a sequential musical development as students move through grades . “ Having dedicated music teachers is extremely rewarding for students . As a team we can refine talents over a longer period of time , which has developed amazing musicianship and singers in our students ,” says Ms Hartley , Music Teacher , Senior School . “ A nice feature of the music program is that Ms Raymond teaches us band from Grade 6 to 12 . She knows everyone as a musician , which helps with individualized feedback . It becomes a welcoming space because I ’ ve known her for so long ,” says McKenna , Grade 12 .
In the Senior School , the choice of repertoire carefully considers representation and inclusivity . Students connect with different cultures , communities and historical contexts with a balanced emphasis on finding individual expression . Students want to challenge themselves and engage with quality music – everything from the classics to current pop culture music , which is rich in terms of musical nuance and expression , says Ms Raymond .
“ The program values the importance of decolonization and respecting Indigenous works while also exploring the richness of different cultures and styles . The program celebrates the works of female and Canadian
composers , and students are encouraged to integrate their own cultural experiences and preferences into their musical expression ,” says Ms Hartley .
LEARNING AS A GROUP
The School uses group-based practice and performance based on the Kodály method of music education . It ’ s rooted in the idea that music should be a social and cultural experience where musical concepts , creativity and collaboration are best taught in group lessons . Historically , music programs relied heavily on individual recitals , an experience that can be isolating or stressful .
Starting in the Junior School , a sense of comfort and safety is a valuable asset to creative development and is supported by group-based learning . “ Redirecting a whole class makes
