THE JOY of Music

Music has always held an important place at Crofton House . In the early days of the School , piano , violin and vocals were all popular lessons , and an appreciation for music was fostered through guest concerts and trips to see the symphony .
Today , the CHS music program is an integral part of the curriculum and offers opportunities for students from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 12 to engage with music in a way that is creative , dynamic and interactive .
MUSIC THROUGH THE GRADES
In the Junior School , all students take music as part of their timetable . There is a very intentional scope and sequence to the music program at CHS that encourages skill development in age-appropriate ways , starting with play-based learning in the early years .
The Junior School music program begins by concentrating on vocal skills . In Grade 6 , students take both vocal and band classes to gain the experience of learning an instrument . It is a priority to match Grade 6 students with an instrument they connect with , says Ms Raymond , Department Head , Arts and Applied Design Skills & Technology , Senior School . The School has a partnership with Long & McQuade , who provide a demonstration day to allow students to see and hear a professional play each
instrument . Students are encouraged to take risks and try an instrument that might be out of their comfort zone ! In Grade 7 , students choose whether to concentrate on an instrument or vocal .
