For students looking to job shadow and develop valuable insights into fields of interest , the Work Experience Program ( WEP ) is available for those in Grade 10 – 12 .
“ This program allows students to gain hands-on experience in a professional environment , but more than that , they gain skill sets that are transferable — things like how to edit their resume , how to do an interview and how to interact in a workplace . They also gain a networking connection and a mentor ,” says Ms Purcell , Manager , Work Integrated Learning , Senior School .
Students are able to take on work experience during winter , spring and summer break with a one-week ( minimum ) immersion experience that can take place in person , virtually or with a combination of the two formats . This program has gained increasing interest over the past several years , and this year saw a 58 % increase in students applying to the program !
For her placement , Eileen , Grade 11 , interned at a mining company where she attended meetings ; helped her supervisor write proposals ; gave her own presentation , and attended equity , diversity and inclusion seminars , among other tasks .
“ It showed me what it means to work as part of a team and take responsibility for your contributions ,” she said . “ I also got a sense of what work culture I like . That week was definitely a very enjoyable experience .
I was happy to be there every day and was sad when it ended .”
The WEP is made possible by the generous alumnae , parents , past parents and the wider CHS community who provide placements in their workplaces .
