A thoughtful and inspirational gift from the Leggat family will allow the School to maintain this unique space and Crofton House trademark for future generations . Strat and Gaye Leggat have a long family history with CHS . Strat ’ s mother , Barbara Shannon Leggat ’ 38 , was the first of three generations to attend Crofton House . Their daughters , Paige Leggat ’ 92 and Shanni Eckford ’ 94 both attended CHS , and granddaughter Leighton ’ 27 is a current student .
As a member of the School ’ s Building and Grounds Committee , Paige became aware of the needs of The Woods today and shared them with her parents . Given the family ’ s commitment and dedication to the outdoors , the decision to support this initiative was immediate .
“ If you contribute to a building , it can be torn down ; if you contribute to an open space and it is maintained , it ’ ll always be there . So this was a wonderful opportunity ,” Strat said .
“ We ’ re committed to it because we believe in the importance of it ,” Gaye said . “ It resonates with us as a family .”
Their gift to restore The Woods will both preserve a pertinent green space and highlight the educational value of the outdoors for many generations of CHS students to come .
The Leggats see The Woods as something that distinguishes a Crofton House education , and they say they ’ re pleased to enable the restoration and maintenance of such an integral part of the campus .
Their donation will ensure that the current needs of the space are met and The Woods are reforested and preserved for future generations of Crofton House students . For further information on their donation , read this year ’ s Report on Giving .
