THE Woods
With blossoming wildflowers , the Horse Tree to spark climbing adventures , and trails where the imagination can run wild , the Woods have brought joy and friendship to generations of students — it wouldn ’ t be CHS without them !
We spoke to some of our students about what they love most about the Woods :
“ I like to collect roly-polies and wood bugs . They ’ re so funny and tickly !” – Jessie , Senior Kindergarten
“ I like to play hide-and-seek in the forest because there are more places to hide .” – Simran , Senior Kindergarten
“ My favourite part about The Woods would be the area close to Kent Field because I get to swing on the tree branches near the big rock , and it ’ s really fun !” – Justine , Grade 3
“ I like The Woods in spring because the flowers are so pretty there , and if the flowers are on the ground , I get to make flower crowns !” – Justine , Grade 3
“ We set up a thing in the Woods — we call it the heart of the Woods — and we go out to the side where the ramp goes , and we set up a dandelion flower and basically went around connecting with nature and thinking about what this land would have been like 500 years ago and who would have walked , or what would have walked , on this land .” – Tineke , Grade 5
“ If I ’ m sad , I sit and talk to the trees . I ’ ll say , ‘ I ’ m having a bad day today ,’ and the trees move ! There ’ s this magical thing about them . I talk to the trees , and they stop , and it ’ s just like they ’ re listening .” – Chloe , Grade 5
“ I like hanging out in The Woods because they ’ re nice and shady — the sun doesn ’ t get to them because of all the trees . It ’ s fun talking to your friends , sitting on the rocks or hanging out there .” – Alexa , Grade 7
“ One of my favourite memories of the Junior School is collecting ‘ golden dirt ’ under the trees and using that to make mud pies to ‘ sell ’ to friends . There was this one specific tree where the dirt underneath was slightly lighter in colour than the rest of the School — that ’ s why we treasured it .” – Mia , Grade 12
“ There is a lovely garden with very beautiful trees , among them the dogwood , maple , Japanese prunella , a monkey tree and other evergreens . At the back of the house , cherry , apple , pear and plum trees have been a delight this spring with all their blossoms . Underneath is soft , thick green grass — very tempting to run in barefoot . Here we have had two picnics under the cherry trees , sweet with blossom .” – Croftonian , 1944
“ With the heralding of spring , the grounds of Crofton House have become an unending source of beauty . The stately trees stand taller and more proudly in their new attire of green against the warm blue of the sky . Purple , white and yellow crocuses daintily thrust their little heads through the grass while daffy-down-dillies dance gaily in the rippling breeze . Velvety lawns stretch to the woods where a mass of greens and browns greet the eye . Over all , the sun beams down and gives the right setting to complete this picture of Crofton House in April .” – Myrna Henderson ’ 47 for the Croftonian , 1947
