For the first time in two years , the Grade 6 – 7 and Grade 8 – 9 productions had live audiences — putting the students ’ teamwork and citizenship to the test as they shared their hard work with an audience !
Dear Edwina Jr ., this year ’ s Grade 6 – 7 “ show within a show ” saw the main character , Edwina Spoonapple , advising a colourful cast of characters in “ The Dear Edwina Show ” her weekly advice-giving production . The musical was big and bold , pushing even the most experienced actors in the cast outside their comfort zone !
“ My character ’ s very outgoing , so I really like being able to be big and open and funny and kind of dramatic ,” said Grade 7 student Alexa , who played Ziggy Montego in the musical .
Castmate Bella , who played Edwina , reflected , “ I can be shy , and Edwina is very outgoing and loud and almost bossy , so I can channel my inner Edwina and become more outgoing with my character !”
For both students , teamwork and collaboration across the Grade 6 – 7 classes were the show ’ s highlights .
“ When you ’ re doing a musical , there ’ s a team , and everyone in the musical is committed to helping with the team . So if you ask anyone , ‘ Hey , what ’ s the melody ?’ or ‘ What ’ s the note for this word ?,’ they ’ ll help you ,” Alexa explained .
The Grade 8 – 9 production this year was Waiting Girl , a combination of two Christian Kiley plays : Waiting Room and Chemo Girl . The show explored cancer and chemotherapy themes , allowing students to grapple with complicated , nuanced ideas . It was a challenge welcomed by cast and crew alike .
