“ It ’ s pretty cool to have experienced being on the stage and then facilitating that at the foundation — with all the inner workings that go on to make the actors look good ,” she said . “ To have seen the play from the beginning as just a script , to seeing how everyone takes their characters forward and how it blossoms into this final product is really lovely .”
THE TECH CREW
The tech crew for the production consisted of students running the sound , lighting and livestream video .
someone sit in the chair and then ‘ Ta-da !,’ you go from your actor to a performer for the night , is really cool ,” she said .
Viela , who is Captain of the Senior School ’ s Studio 65 art club , did hair for the show for the first time . In previous years , pre-pandemic , she supported with makeup . “ I wanted to experience a different form of art , other than drawing and sculpture ,” she said of her involvement in the productions . “ It ’ s a really unique experience — seeing how the show comes alive , how the characters start to form .”
With Studio 65 , Viela also oversaw the creation of the show ’ s Venetian masks . “ Because the masks are made by Studio 65 , I think we finally have involvement in the community . Art is not just sitting quietly in a room and doing drawings — it ’ s everywhere ,” she said .
For all involved , what stands out most about the production is that the community created by the cast and crew celebrates all facets of theatre . “ There ’ s a place for everybody here ,” Lucy said . “ Even if you ’ re not an actor .”
Keeping the mics running for the cast of Shakespeare in Love was sound mixer , tech crew member and Grade 11 student Elisabeth , with leadership and guidance from Mr Tugwell , Manager , Theatre & Audio Visual . This show was Elisabeth ’ s first largescale production running sound ; last year , she managed the livestream for the Junior School musical .
“ When I first joined the tech crew , I was in Grade 10 , and I wanted to learn more about what goes on behind the scenes ,” she said of her initial interest in the technical side of productions .
THE HAIR & MAKEUP TEAM
The remaining piece of the puzzle was hair and makeup . Cast members were encouraged to do their own makeup . McKenna and Viela , both Grade 11 students , created the cast ’ s hairstyles with direction from Dr Beukema , Assistant Department Head , English , Senior School , and Ms Valdiri , Teacher , Languages , Senior School . McKenna and Viela have supported hair and makeup for the School productions since Grade 8
For McKenna , who was also an extra in the show and the assistant director on the Grade 8 – 9 production , doing hair is a personal passion . Each year , the show gives her a chance to try new and challenging styles . “ Having
