against external heat as well as
sound. Large overhanging ledges
on roofs provide additional shade
against the sun and adjustable
louvered glass windows ensure
maximum cross-ventilation into
the houses.
Water, as we are all aware,
is highly precious. It is the
essence of life without which, our
animals and plants cannot grow
and flourish. Unfortunately, we
in Malaysia are profligate to the
point of being irresponsible in
our management and cultivation
of water. Our problem is that we
are too “lucky” -- we simply have
too much rainfall, and the real
problem lies in our not having
sufficient infrastructure to deal
with it. What if ALL developers
build homes that allow dwellers
to capture and store rain water?
If every house had a rainwater
harvesting tank, then the strain
on drainage is considerably
lessened and dwellers have the
happy result of having free water
to use. In a sense, the state
would be giving the householder
20m3 of free water to use!
In Ken Rimba, rainwater
harvesting tanks are being
installed
per
household
to provide for gardening,
landscaping, car wash, etc.
The project goes to great
lengths to ensure that all its
practices
are
sustainable
and meet international green
development standards. In this
respect, materials with recycled
content are used wherever
possible. Some other practices
put in place are the use of
recycled materials.
In the KEN Rimba Legian
Residences development, the
main gate of every unit is made
from recycled rice husks which is

Figure 8: The utilization of transparent roof tiles introduces natural
daylight into habitable areas which were traditionally ignored. In
Legian Residences, light from the skylight facilitates plant growth.
Indoor plants will lower internal temperatures and also create
healthier indoor air quality.

the upper level of the house, making the sleeping areas more
comfortable.
