PART 3

The online journal article Art and games by Jack Halloran from Tate, was writing about how digital games take some inspiration of art such as the game Dark Souls is modelled on the Italian Gothic style of Milan Cathedral (Halloran, electronic journal, 2015). The article explains about few artists who were involved in developing games, and the reasons for their style such as the Danish designer Arnt Jensen of the game Limbo who experienced exploring the dark Scandinavian woods as a child (Halloran, electronic journal, 2015). However the game Limbo takes the art direction to 1920s German Expressionist Cinema to create the link with Art Jensen experience to create the dark woods environment (Halloran, electronic journal, 2015). The article had mentioned the artist M.C. Escher as inspiration for Monument Valley and the reason for taking his work is because the designer Ken Wong said “so that it’s not just an impossible shape, but there are characters in there and it’s its own little world.” (Halloran, electronic journal, 2015). Finally, there is another form of art which has inspired digital games called ‘synaesthesia’ (APPENDIX 2) . The article mentions the game Rez which was inspired by Russian abstract artist, Wassily Kandinsky’s synaesthesia works which build the connections between music and colour. The problems with the journal it does not have enough games with arts reference as the online press article by Jack Yarwood, therefore Tate needs to explore more games to build up its research.
