Black Markets
La Perouse, NSW
Looking to be invigorated with Aboriginal culture in Sydney? Than look no further, the Black Markets is your place to be. Open next Sunday, 7 May 2017 at Bare Island, La Perouse from 9:30am, you can enjoy a Welcome to Country, cultural performances, participate in cultural workshops, try some native food and buy some local artifacts and arts and crafts.
The next Black Markets is going to be a special one as First Nation Solutions Aboriginal Corporation is holding its annual Aboriginal Cultural Welcome ceremony for refugees and newly arrived Australians. Individuals and families who are new to Australia are invited to join in a special traditional Welcome and smoking ceremony conducted by Aboriginal Elder, Uncle Greg Simms.
“This is the second year we have run the welcome festival and the reason we do this is Aboriginal people are welcoming people, and also the appropriate people to welcome newly arrived visitors to Australia.” Peter Cooley, CEO of First Hand Nations Solutions says.
The day will also be a chance to share stories on not only the hardships but the achievements we share with people dispossessed from their land and forced to leave their communities,” Peter said.
Entry price is $2.50 per person onto Bare Island which is usually only open for tours, however for children under five and refugees are free.
