Born Adam Douglas Hill Blacktown, Black Douglas is a proud Dhungutti man who currently resides in Redfern. Born in Blacktown and raised in Penrith, Sydney. His father is of Aboriginal descent and his grandmother was a part of the “stolen generation” and was taken at the young age of 12 years old, and passed at the age of 36 years at Burnt Bridge. “Dad was a strong black man and I am proud to now represent him,” Black Douglas says.
Black Douglas is a classically trained Yidaki (Didgeridoo) player. Performances include Festival of the Dreaming, Australian Idol finalist, The Deadly’s, Rugby World Cup Opening Ceremony, “Requiem” Peter Sculthorpe International tours (Musica Viva) and Paul Jarman Projects.
Originally trained in illustration and photography, observing a family of artisans, became self-practiced in painting with a style influenced by the study of Graphic Design devoutly politicized per social justice. Black Douglas is known for his acrylics on canvas, “I work in a broad variety of mediums today including photography, installation and graphics.”
