Sky Smeed is an independent Folk/Americana recording and performing artist who does not belong to a major record label. He produces and releases his music independently, managing his own career, touring, and CD/vinyl production, often featuring his work on his own site
Sky Smeed is a folk singer-songwriter whose songs balance humor, heart, and honesty. He was raised in a one-room schoolhouse outside Chanute, Kansas. At 16 his sister handed him a Takamine acoustic guitar for his birthday. That old guitar, along with a growing love for Bruce Springsteen’sThe Ghost of Tom Joad and Son Volt’sTrace, sent him down a long road of writing songs and playing for anyone willing to listen.
Twenty-seven years later, Sky is getting ready to release his 10th album,Live at the Rock House. Made up mostly of new songs, with a few longtime favorites mixed in, the record was captured live in front of an attentive, appreciative audience. It reflects what matters most to Sky: standing in front of people, telling stories, and singing songs. With the studio gloss stripped away, what’s left is a folk singer-songwriter
doing exactly what he loves.
These days, Sky calls Lawrence, Kansas home, where a strong creative
community, family, and friends continue to shape his work. His music has
been featured on NBC’sThe Blacklist, airs regularly on Kansas Public
Radio’sTrail Mix, and even serves as the theme song for the Lawrence Humane
Society. Often compared to Gram Parsons and John Prine, and known for the
easygoing stage presence of artists like Todd Snider and Paul
Thorn, Sky brings a relaxed confidence to every
performance. Whether he’s making an audience laugh,
tear up, or sing along, his songs
tend to stick around long after
the final chord fades.
