British Army Captain George Bromley traversed from Lands End to John O ’ Groats in a straight line to raise money for veteran charities that helped his own recovery after having fractured his cervical spine during an Army rugby game in 2019 .
Bromley , 36 , undertook the “ Solo Beeline Britain ” challenge in April / May 2022 , to kayak , walk and swim unassisted across 875 miles of Britain ’ s most austere environments . After 44 days , Bromley achieved his

These charities were there for him when he needed them most .
Apart from his life changing injury that could have ended his military career , as well as compensation issues associated to the injury , Bromley decided he needed to get away and do something not done previously . “ I was told to take it easy ,” said Bromley , “ but like any soldier , with inactivity you feel like you ’ re letting your teammates down , not getting work done together . So that was the low moment . I learned what I was capable of , and what I wasn ’ t capable of . I ’ ve been through life being very lucky , maybe not knowing my value , my worth .”
Bromley soon recovered , and with the help of his commanding officer at the time , was medically cleared to continue service , including serving on a UN mission where he earned a meritorious service award .
“ When I came back , I just could see , ‘ well hang on a minute , I ’ ve been through this slump ,’ but I ’ ve seen that if you engage and you smile and you ’ re just proactive and you just want to get on with it … it pays off in the end .”
“ It all felt like it made sense ,” said the Bath native . “ I ’ m doing something that no one has ever done before in history , and I ’ m also doing it for charities that helped me through the injury , … and still continue to help people in Britain and in Ukraine .”
Legend
As Bromley transitioned to his role as the Executive Officer for the ARRC ’ s Deputy Chief of Staff Support , Spanish Army Brigadier General Victor Bados Nieto in 2020 , his goal materialized as he continued to gain support for Solo Beeline Britain . “ I can only speak good of him . He ’ s an exceptional officer in all regards ,” said Bados . “ He ’ s committed to his job , but among other things he has a very high level of emotional intelligence , so he connects quickly with everyone .”
“ During the attempt , said Bromley “ I asked myself , ‘ When am I ever going to finish ?’ but when I stopped thinking about what to look forward to , and concentrated on those last four or five days , then the miles came down quite quickly . I really didn ’ t enjoy the end , and thought I ’ d never do anything like that again .”
Bados said , “ It reflected his strong personality , how strong he is mentally , resilience , and his commitment to others , because at the end of the day he raised money for people in need , so also his generosity .”
