GYM NEWS
GYM INVESTMENT AND IMPROVEMENT
This year the gym has seen a huge investment in equipment and improvements . We recently had 6 brand new Assault bikes delivered as well as a new Lifting Platform with Squat Cage . The Battalion has also invested in 8 brand new adjustable squat racks for the gymnasium . This has massively aided in teaching Strength and Conditioning sessions . Post Covid lockdowns we have been able to get back to teaching , coaching and go through the fundamentals of key functional movements . In addition , the gymnasium has seen a new chest , calf , and lifting platforms . The gymnasium flooring has been dismantled and revamped which aids us with taking lessons and the Soldier Conditioning Review . The old sauna has been dismantled , and we hope to see the arrival of a new one for service users to enjoy in their leisure time .
Recently the netball team , predominantly made up of members from HQ ARRC , have been training in the gym for the new season starting after summer leave , to represent their respective cap badges in the Inter Corps competition in October .
Here at Imjin barracks , we conduct a range of fitness tests for UK soldiers and multinational cap badges . We prepare and get them ready with a 4 – 6- week minimum build-up training plan . It consists of tabbing , running , body weight and weighted exercises to prepare them for the annual RFTS ( Role Fitness Test Soldier ). Every 6 months they will also conduct a SCR ( Soldiers Conditioning Review ). Gurkha ARRC Support Battalion supports HQ ARRC throughout the year . By ensuring that the Battalion keeps up to date with their RFTs and SCRs , they are able to deploy each year on various exercises . We have the important job of ensuring everyone is in date and deployable .
Indoor cycling classes have been running at the gym since Feb 22 . The gym staff have worked hard to bring 11 spin bikes back into service . As a result , it has meant that the bikes can be booked by any qualified instructor at the station and utilised for sessions . Classes are starting to become in high demand as their popularity grows . Numerous instructors have made themselves known to the gym and publicised their own classes .
SSgt Helen Jones , HQ ARRC G6 DCO Team , has become a regular and firm favourite instructor . She is qualified for indoor cycling and has proactively advertised her sessions . There have been many newcomers to indoor cycling and many now have the ‘ bug ’. The sessions are packed with top tunes and good humour , enabling all attendees to work hard . Major Ian Fowler and Sgt Shaun Hanes ( DCO Team ) have supported SSgt Helen Jones from the outset , drumming up business and attending all sessions . She now has a strong multinational following and is facilitating 2-3 sessions per week . The bikes have been a welcome addition to the gym as it provides another activity that is inclusive and open to all .
Imjin Golf Society Reme Captain ’ s Charity Day
Imjin Barracks Golf Society entered a multi national team to help support the inaugural REME Captain ’ s Charity Day at Tewkesbury Park Golf Club on 9th March 2022 . The team included Maj Stuart McCubbin ( CAN ), Maj Kate Jensen ( US ), WO2 Rob Delamar MBE ( GBR ), and Cpl Alistair Hennessey ( GBR ).
A third place finish for the team was a great result with a couple of holes where all failed to impress . Pick of the bunch was Maj McCubbin who scored an impressive 40 points of the white tees , the same can ’ t be said for WO2 Delamar who provided little more than morale …
Birdies on the long par 4 third hole and on the 14th from Cpl Hennessey helped scoring , along with an impressive longest drive win for Maj Jensen .
Post golf the event continued with fantastic food and the prize giving and raffle . Cpl Hennessey ’ s luck ran out as he saw all other members pick up the spoils . WO2 Delamar walked away with two four ball vouchers , while Maj McCubbin and Maj Jensen both collected one four ball voucher each ( I await invitations !)
A special mention and thanks have to go to REME Captain WO2 Anthony Parkinson who invited our team to represent his home unit , and for organising such a brilliant day . This was recognised not only by the amount of money he raised for his association , but by the presenting of his Corps colours . Congratulations Anthony .
