Supper , arguably Leonardo ’ s most famous painting , which ( much to my surprise ) is on an old monastery ’ s wall . It was commissioned by the Sforza family whose castle we also visited later in the afternoon ( the third cultural visit ) and was done in the Chiaroscuro style , which was enhanced by the lighting in the building . It was very impressive and would have been quite grandiose back in the day , given how spectacular it still looks today , despite the deterioration and restoration .
Exercise ARRCADE RECORD was a very educational , visually stunning exercise , that gave us the chance to improve our relations with our Italian partners whom we only normally communicate with via a mailbox . It also provided a greater insight on how they operate and how we ourselves can improve .
16 members of HQ ARRC Central Staff ( CS ) Branch were fortunate enough to take part in an informative visit of our NATO partner ’ s cell ( NRDC ) in Milan , Italy on Exercise ARRCADE RECORD , which commenced on 7 February 2022 .
At NRDC the following day , we were given an opening presentation explaining how they operate ; what their main aims are and their management style . The party then visited the various cells that corresponded to our own departments in HQ ARRC : IM , IHUB and Legal . This gave us the opportunity to see how each cell operates in comparison to our own set up in Imjin Barracks , and more importantly be able to share ‘ Best Practice ’. The Branch was fortuitously given the chance to take a good look at set up of their Command Room and how they would operate on Operations .
The Adjutant General ’ s Corps ( AGC ) has been organising the Triple Crown Challenge for over 20 years ; the purpose is to bring AGC personnel together to conduct two competitions , Military Skills and a March and Shoot . This event is held at the home of the Corps in Worthy Down .
This year marked the 30th anniversary of the formation of the cap badge . A proud moment for the organisation to have reached its milestone with astounding success over the past decades on all fronts . To mark this historic and auspicious occasion , all AGC personnel posted across the globe attended the challenge on 27 April 22 in Worthy Down , Winchester .
Competition is fierce and the participating teams commenced the training months in advance . Indeed , the training required in advance is as important in many ways as the competition itself . For 2022 , Warrant Officer Class 2 Daniel Nixon , provided excellent support , updating the event in line with the
We also had to conduct OPERATION TEAMWORK as directed by CGS ; giving Service Personnel the opportunity to consider and reflect on the British Army ’ s current culture and approach to inclusion . The Branch conducted this with a series of topics , where everyone had an open and fair chance to give their points of view . In the end it was a great discussion group with all ranks able to participate fully in a broad ranging discussion with senior officers , giving us all something to take away from the session .
The Branch conducted several cultural visits . The first visit took in the local sights with a boat tour around Lake Como . The second was to Milan Cathedral ( Duomo de Milano ), which was very impressive and included a roof tour .
During the latter half of the day the Branch explored the city and I went to see The Last

new COVID protocols . This eventually made the competitive events more physically and mentally intense than in previous years .
Both competitions started in Worthy Down camp followed by several elements of the competition – within the close proximity of the camp for the Military Skills Team and no further than 5 miles from the camp for the March and Shoot Team . The competition was a great success . Prizes were presented by Lieutenant General Ivan Jones , before competitors enjoyed a well-earned barbecue and live music from the Band of the Adjutant General ’ s Corps .
The march and shoot competition retained its format from previous years , although the distance and the weight were altered adding greater intensity . Team members consisted of personnel from HQ ARRC and 1 Sig Bde .

The participants were required to reach the shooting range as quickly as possible , which was about 5 miles away from the starting point carrying the weight of 15 kg . Upon undertaking the shooting , they were to return to the camp as quickly as possible . A gruelling 10-mile March and Shoot which was challenging but thoroughly enjoyed by the participants .

Once the task in stands were completed , the participants were to carry ammunition tin and stretcher weighing a combined weight of 100kg . Lastly , the final part of this competition was to complete the obstacle course that comprised of water and bridge crossing , tyre flip and many more as fast as possible . Although it was tough and challenging , safe to say , it was worthwhile too .
In total , 72 teams entered for March and Shoot and 42 teams for the Military Skills competition .
