NANA Forms a Public Benefit Company

On April 28 , 2022 , the NANA Board of Directors approved the formation of a public benefit company ( LLC ).
What is a public benefit company ?
Public benefit companies ( PBCs ) are companies that operate for profit but are intended to produce benefits for communities and for its shareholders . They also operate in a responsible and sustainable manner .

GeoFORCE Alaska Students Explore the Lower 48

NANA

In June , 12 students from Buckland , Deering , Kiana , Kivalina , Kobuk , Noatak and Noorvik hit the road to study geology in Alaska , Arizona and Utah . The Northwest Arctic students joined 21 others from the Interior and the North Slope to begin the second year of their four-year GeoFORCE Alaska program .

In Utah , the students visited Zion National Park and in Arizona , they visited Ooh Aah Point in Grand Canyon National Park . GeoFORCE Alaska , sponsored by NANA and Red Dog Mine , among other organizations , focuses on learning geology and career paths in geosciences starting in the eighth or ninth grade . What is the purpose of NANA ’ s public benefit company ?
The new public benefit company is intended to benefit the NANA region and its shareholders by :
• Receiving , supporting , executing and managing grant projects that strengthen social and economic viability ;
• Addressing the significant social and economic needs in the region ; and
• Pursuing federal grant programs in addition to non-grant opportunities to meet NANA ’ s social responsibilities and improve infrastructure .
What makes a public benefit company different ?
PBCs must report on how they are advancing their purpose . They must consider the interests of their shareholders as well as the specific public benefits they intend to deliver .

High School Students Complete Midnight Sun Internship

Eight interns from various communities in the NANA region completed the “ Midnight Sun ” high school internship program this summer . Over four weeks , the high school students grew their professional skills and gained real-world experience working in NANA offices .

Under the guidance of the shareholder relations department , the interns strengthened skills in communication , public speaking , customer service , shareholder support and administrative work .

As part of a special project , the interns interviewed Elders and shareholders about subsistence practices and community leadership . To mark the end of the program , the interns took turns presenting the knowledge they gained to their peers .
