NANA broadband project gains FAST-41 designation, enabling accelerated progress
The NANA broadband project, under the Economic Development and Sustainability department, has made significant strides over the past several months and was recently officially accepted into the FAST-41 program. This designation reflects national recognition of the importance of connecting Northwest Alaska to high-speed internet. The FAST-41 program is a legislatively established process for improving federal agency coordination and timeliness of environmental reviews for infrastructure projects, as established by Title 41 of the Fixing America ' s Surface Transportation Act. This act established the FAST-41 review process and the Permitting Council to implement it.
Through FAST-41, the Permitting Council provides focused, hands-on permitting support to infrastructure projects and improves efficiency through clearer timelines and better coordination across federal agencies.
FAST-41 is intended to:
• Improve early consultation and coordination among government agencies
• Increase transparency through the publication of project-specific timetables with completion dates for all federal authorizations and environmental reviews
• Increase accountability through consultation and reporting on projects
FAST-41 does not change any statutory or regulatory requirements, environmental law, regulations, review processes, or public involvement procedures, and does not predetermine the outcome of any federal decision-making process.
Thanks to the $ 65 million investment from the National Telecommunications and Information Administration( NTIA) Tribal Broadband Connectivity Program( TBCP), this critical project continues make steady progress. Thirty containers of fiber optic cable are on track to arrive in the U. S. this May, with delivery to the region scheduled for the summer. The economic development and sustainability( EDS), lands, and facilities teams are working closely to ensure all land space needs are accounted for, with leases for village equipment shelters currently underway. Permitting efforts are progressing in partnership with Kuna Engineering, a NANA subsidiary, and meetings with federal, state, and local land managers are actively taking place to support these efforts.
Major Developments Thirty containers of fiber optic-cable are still on track to arrive in the U. S. in May and are scheduled for delivery to the region this summer.

“ Infrastructure projects supported through FAST-41 achieved a Record of Decision( ROD) nearly 18 months faster than those that did not participate in the program.”
are planned for, with leases in progress for village equipment shelters.
We are also working with Kuna Engineering on permitting efforts. Meetings with federal, state, and local land managers are actively underway.
Field Progress and Community Collaboration In March, Sturgeon Electric, along with subcontractors Cruz Construction and TempTel, and NANA’ s lands gravel manager Ezra Adams, led a weeklong reconnaissance trip by snowmachine along the proposed fiber route. The mission was a success: The team gathered valuable data and imagery, gaining a deeper understanding of the terrain and logistical challenges ahead. This effort is an important step forward for the project and showcased the power of collaboration across teams and communities.
Vice President of Economic Development and Sustainability Albie Dallemolle would like to extend our sincere thanks to those who helped make this effort possible.
To the village shareholder resource coordinators and board members— thank you for your warm hospitality, hot meals, and strong support in each community.
To the Kotzebue and village facilities staff— thank you for your tireless logistical support day and night.
To the shareholder relations team— thank you for seamlessly coordinating every detail behind the scenes.
And a special thank you to Ezra Adams, who traveled the entire route with the team and safely guided the team through our beautiful region.
This kind of teamwork is what drives our mission forward, and we are grateful to everyone who was involved.
