Elders ' Advice

Aatchuqtuutiłiq Avatmun- Sharing

Sharing is how Iñupiaq care for each other. It is how we make sure those who have less are cared for.
Promote and teach sharing by making sure that the first catch or gathering is shared and celebrated with our children.

• Make sure non-Iñupiat who live with us or are visiting are included, so they may feel welcome.
• Always be available when someone needs help.
• Advise all young people to help Elders with chores and to share with them.
• Advise children to respect the land they live on, the animals they hunt, and the importance of sharing the catch.
• Elders must demonstrate and advise others about sharing the land with others, especially the harvesting of its resources.
• Iñupiat must also be advised to share food with children, widows, widowers and orphans.
• Elders should promote and encourage family time through family dinners and family gathering to teach obedience, listening, morals, respect for all and to maintain our traditional way of life. ■
