camaraderie and having a couple drinks.”
And although five-pin league bowling has
slightly decreased in popularity with each passing
year, league play still makes up a big percentage of
that business.
“A league can be two lanes, sometimes,” said
Meconi. “They range from two lanes to ten
lanes...there’s probably about 20 leagues here.”
Bowling has made a comeback among young
people. “It’s increasing. We’re going up for sure,” says
Clarkson. With the embracing of all things retro,
bowling’s getting hip again. And operators are
working hard to attract the recreational bowler. Most
major bowling centres offer “cosmic” or
“rock-and-roll” bowling, featuring music, disco
lights and glow-in-the-dark bowling balls and pins
on Friday and Saturday nights as well as special
holidays like New Year’s Eve. It’s a reasonably-priced
night out for couples and groups that combines fun,
fitness and yes, French fries if you want ‘em.
