Borland is hopeful that the Winter Classic will bring a
good mix of Leafs and Wings fans out to watch the game.
Stars of the Game will be open special hours on New Years
Day when the two teams clash.
Borland even gave his prediction about who will win on
January first. “I think only because the Wings have played
outside and have experienced it and they are at home so I
have to give the advantage to the Wings.”
The coming of the Winter Classic means, of course, that
the Windsor Classic returns as well. Investors Group started
their very own version of the NHL’s event last year. It gives
Leafs and Wings fans the chance to battle it out in street
hockey games that shut down Riverside Drive between
Ouellette and Ferry Street for 2 days over the Christmas
holidays.
The organizer for the event, Trevor Whaling, knows the
rivalry between Leafs and Wings fans in Windsor is
incredible during the Winter Classic. The Windsor Classic
went smoothly last year in spite of the NHL lockout, and is
looking to have a repeat performance this year.
Participants are encouraged to wear their Leafs or
Wings jerseys in support of their team. This event gives
Leafs and Wings fans one more way to voice their opinions
on their team, show their pride and of course have fun while
proving which team has the best fans.
Serviss said that with a rivalry dating back to 1925
there is so much tradition built up that it will never go away.
It will just keep growing as more games are played and
memories formed between the two age-old rivals.
“That rivalry goes way back farther than both of our
ages combined,” said Mike Sisic. “It will stay that way
forever.”
