“I think it is bigger, there is more of a competition
between the two teams,” said Sisic.
Both Bob and Mike also agreed that the reunion in the
same conference will ignite the battle back to what it was
during the original six era.
Bob Sisic said it is hard to argue that the Leafs are the
better team when the Wings have won four Stanley Cups in the
last 14 years, while the Leafs have zero cup wins since 1967. He
said the Leafs always play well against the Wings but are never
able to make long playoff runs win when it counts.
Bob Sisic truly believes that for Toronto and Detroit fans
the Winter Classic will hold huge significance for the winner of
the game and the rivalry between the teams and their fans will
never be bigger. He would like nothing more than to go back to
his brother in-law and father in-law and say, “I told you so,
Toronto has bragging rights. They are the team.”
The battle’s already heating up in the Sisic family. “We’ll
see what happens on January first, you (Leafs fans) can brag
all you want but when it comes time to do the actual Winter
Classic here it’s going to be a different story and Detroit is
going to end up on top like they always do,” said Mike in
response.
Ed Borland, owner of Stars of the Game sees the rivalry
between the groups of fans, but a majority of the hockey fans
that come out to watch games at his place are Leafs fans.
“Unfortunately we don’t see Wings fans out the way we do
Leafs fans,” said Borland. “Win or lose Leaf fans are here,
there are Leafs fans in the building all the time whether the
games are good or bad.”
Borland added that the Wings don’t generally come out to
cheer their team on until they have made it to the post-season.
“The Leafs fans are crazy all the time, you know who a Leafs
fan is,” said Borland. “We have (in my bar) more Habs
(Montreal Canadiens) fans than Wings fans. There is a lot of
Leafs and Habs rivalry who yap back and forth at each other.”
