CONNECTING
With the start of the school year right around the corner
(I know, there’s still some summer left) thousands of local
college and university students - and even some high school
students - are once again facing that annual question from
everyone they encounter: what are you going to be? What are
you going to do?
Many of them have an answer. They’re embarking on, or
continuing, an educational path that is going to lead them into
healthcare, journalism, engineering, administration, welding
or the culinary arts. They have a clear idea of what they want
to, you know, do for a living after the last exam is written and
the last paper marked.
But even for those who have a clear picture of where
they’re headed may end up surprised at the life they
ultimately find themselves living. How many of us would have
said “I want to be a cycling advocate” or “I want to be a
dragster racer?” Here at The Hub, we believe Windsor-Essex is
full of folks doing all sorts of interesting and unexpected
things. In this issue, we introduce you to some of them in our
features, and hope you’ll admire their accomplishments right
along with us.
August promises to be a month full of fun things to see
and do, because after all, it is still summer time. So get out
there and bike, hike, sightsee and enjoy while the days are still
long and the weather’s fine. We’re going to take our own
advice; we’ll see you again in September!
Oh August, the last hurrah of the summer season. Even
though we still luxuriate in balmy temperatures and long
summer evenings, we subconsciously make a point of fitting
in all those things on our summer to do list we naively
thought we had lots of time to accomplish.
Somehow, hours spent reading on the front porch,
leisurely walks along the riverfront and cold glasses of sangria
shared with friends on restaurant patios don't seem like
things we include on to-do lists. Yet, when the calendar tells us
there is less than five weeks to go before September knocks on
our door, we feel compelled to fit it all in. With a sense of
urgency, we check our Facebook pages and calendars of
events for opportunities to get our fill of summer.
Thanks goodness there are many ways to ensure that we
get a chance to do just that. As always, our monthly calendar
of events is overflowing with something for everyone. And, if
Point Pelee is a place you haven't visited in some time, this
month's feature might inspire you to make the trip before
snow flies again.
Whatever summer time activities you're determined to fit
in, download this month's issue and bring it along. There's
nothing like a bit of reading material while you take shelter in
the shade, take a long drink from your water bottle and plan
your next step. You might find something interesting just
around the corner.!
