Design Position
Balanced, Responsible Design
It is important to begin the design journey of 'The House' by reflecting on my position as a designer
(as developed in volume 1). I have been mindful of these values throughout the design process and
examples of this will be addressed throughout.
Balance + Responsible Design
Dignity and Gender
Functional design that is
inclusive and makes the user
feel comfortable.
Aesthetic and
Function
Financially responsible design
that maintains a good balance
between function and
aesthetics.
Conservation
Appropriate design for
aesthetic, historical, evidential
and communal reasons.
Not retrogressive.
Chosen Site
The House
I have chosen to redevelop Viviers Fish Market as
it is a building with lots of potential and
flexibility, with limited historical value and a
simple construction. The scope of possibilities is
also increased by the outbuildings and proximity
to the water.
Old Portsmouth
Viviers Fish Market
The Bridge Tavern
Viviers Fish Market lends itself well to a broad
brief and analysis of the area (volume 1) has
shown that the junction that the building is
adjacent to, means there is a lot of passing foot
traffic.
Choosing Two Buildings
The Bridge Tavern is secluded and dwarfed by
surrounding buildings making it hard to access.
Hence I have identified the opportunity to connect
the two sites in a combined brief, which will
utilise the surrounding area and increase the
footfall on the tavern side of the water.
