Scale Although the sketch models had been made within the working model which was at scale 1:100, the forms inside had not yet been considered at a scale, just purely created to develop composition. With reference to the Metric Handbook, I began to research approximate sizes for rooms within the house, from which I made the blue foam volumes at 1:100. When arranging these within the 1:100 working model, it became clear that my building was much larger than I had realised. Although still larger than the approximated rooms, the flow of the colour sketch model had potential to work. I then placed the working model at 1:100 inside of a larger working model at 1:50. Expansion of the Brief As outlined in the introduction, the new addition to The House is The City Farm. As another educational facility for young adults, this function pairs well with the house. As shown in the following diagrams, the glass tower has been designed as a transitional space between the three main elements, The House, The Garden and The City Farm. The tower won't have vertical circulation within it, but will be accessible from both the ground and first floors, and connected to an exterior staircase. The tower will have a steel construction with toughened glass cladding, symbolic of a traditional greenhouse. On both floors it will have planters lining the walls so that the volume appears full of greenery from the inside and out. On the ground floor it will be adjacent to the kitchen and serve as a conservatory might in an actual house, with various seating. On the first floor the tower room will sit next to the open-plan office and function as a private meeting room. A Building Inside a Building By composing the space around the colour model, within the larger scale model, I would produce rooms that were at a more realistic scale. However this meant that only the left side of the building would be occupied and all the necessary functions full-filled, leading me to a natural expansion of the brief.
