Husking Contest
by Jerry Hostetler
Fast hands and flying husks
were seen on a warm autumn day in
early October at the Indiana State
Hand Corn Husking Contest, held at
the Craig Geyer farm near Bremen.
Participants in the timed contest husk
corn from one row, throwing the ears
into a horse-drawn wagon. The corn is
then weighed and inspected for excess
husks. There are eight different male
and female divisions covering youth
through senior citizens.
Taking the top spot in the men’s
open division was Topeka’s own, Atlee
Lambright. Atlee finished with 298.78
pounds of corn husked. Atlee’s brother, Duane Lambright, of Shipshewana
placed second in the young men’s division by husking 261.06 pounds.
The husking contest is held annually the first Saturday in October.
