Towers, Walls and Hedges
They were only approximately
three generations after the flood,
Noah’s great grandchildren. Genesis
11 tells us about their efforts to build
a tower, the tower of Babel. Why a
tower?
The Jewish historian Flavius Josephus, recorded for us the oral history
that had been passed down through
the generations. His account of the
tower of Babel describes the people as
living in fear. They feared that once
again the flood waters would rise and
they could all be doomed.
Then came Nimrod, renowned as
a mighty hunter, charismatic, greatly
admired, but manipulative and arrogant as well. According to Josephus,
Nimrod used his popularity to lead the
people into a socialistic dictatorship
where they all became dependant on
him. He convinced the people to build
a huge tower of water resistant materials, baked bricks and tar for mortar,
so they could take refuge in case God
sent another flood, and he also assured
them that, once they reached heaven,
he, the mighty hunter, would avenge
the deaths of their forefathers and
thus remove the risk of destruction.
