Wardrobe, Tennelle worked tirelessly
beside her mom and sister with costumes and set construction. The Flowers family also had a lot of help not just
from students, but families of the cast
and even some former students who
returned just to help out.
Shilo said that she loves involving
the cast in more than just the acting
and crew work of the performances
Westview puts on, and it is this deeper
involvement that inspires greater
dedication and enthusiasm in the
students. Last year Westview performed Much Ado About Nothing in a
very cast-directed setting. Not wanting to do a traditional Shakespearean
play, Tennelle condensed and re-wrote
the script to fit less than 20 pages,
and then set the story on a modernday cruise ship. While Shilo worked
with the cast of the main plot, Tennelle worked with the extras to create
original storylines that really succeeded in hamming up the whole show,
making it a side-splitting comedy for
everyone. It was during this show that
Shilo mentioned she was considering
doing Wardrobe the following year,
which sent her students cheering with
excitement and anticipation. During
the summer the students met at the
Flowers’ home to brainstorm about
costumes and set design, and the set
for Wardrobe was constructed entirely
over Christmas break. Technological
high points included the Centaur (Ryan
Wisler) whose costume piece had back
legs that moved with him when he
walked, as well as the cracking of the
stone table and the big battle scene at
the end that encompassed the entire
stage. Since the original script did not
have the wardrobe appearing on stage
during any point in the show, Shilo and
her crew built a makeshift wardrobe
that was set on stage for the closing.
All the cast members passed through
the wardrobe to take their final bows,
giving the show a superb finish.
