He was one of those mysterious characters about whom communities never tire in surmising and conjecturing strange things, and about which little actual proof could be adduced. Concerning him, Madam Gossip was very sure he had been most severely disappointed in love in early life, and that he in consequence resolved upon a hermit life, and that he accumulated a large amount of money, which he had hid or deposited in various places. We believe that rumor could not safely estimate this amount at less than $50,000. He had no relatives in this section of the country, nor has there any been made known since his death, of closer kin than a nephew. After his death, a will was found among his effects, which he had made while in Ohio, in one of his visits there. It is reported that the will was written for him by M.R. Waite, now Chief-Justice of the United States. It was entered on probate in the LaGrange Circuit Court, and the executors named duly appointed, when some of his nephews 2 acres of outdoor displays including lots of campfire and outdoor cooking accessories!!
