The Westview varsity girls track team finished a Photo by Brenda Carpenter spectacular and historic 2011 season with an impressive third place finish at the state track meet at Bloomington on June 4th. Westview Junior and highly recruited athlete, Skyler Carpenter, starred for the Warrior tracksters with three, yes three, first place finishes. Fellow classmate and teammate Mandy Jones placed second, behind Skyler, in the long jump. Carpenter finished first in the long jump, 100 meter hurdles and the 300 meter hurdles, setting a high school girls state record in the 300 hurdles, which had been held for 25 years. The previous record holder, Deb Sauers (Columbia City) is now a nurse in Fort Wayne. Last week Sauers was treating one of her patients, who was a colleague of Brenda Carpenter (Skyler’s mother)at Meadowview Elementary. When Sowers found that her patient was from the Westview area, she said, “Oh, Skyler Carpenter goes to that school and she broke my state track record last Saturday.” Since that day, Sauers has made contact with Skyler to congratulate her, with mixed emotions, on her outstanding performance and on breaking her long-standing record. Ironically enough, Sauers and Carpenter both had and have the same outside coach, Steve Beattie from Indianapolis.
