Westview Girls Basketball
The Lady Warriors have had a trying start to the 2011-2012 season, but
that hasn’t diminished their effort. The
Warriors are still giving it all they have
during practices and games according
to senior Skyler Carpenter.
The girl’s squad has won three of
their last five games after opening up
the season 0-5. The Warriors wins have
come against Bremen (58-46), Elkhart
Christian Academy (69-23), and
Central Noble (70-24). The tough start
can be traced back to the teams little
varsity experience and also its schedule. The team had to face Wawasee,
Elkhart Memorial, Prairie Heights, and
Northridge all on the road. Seven of
the team’s first eight games were actually played on the road with their only
home game coming against the much
bigger 4A Goshen High School team.
“We’re getting progressively better
as the season goes on. We started out
a little rocky,” said Carpenter. In their
last win, the Warriors had ten players
score for them. That includes Carpenter’s 21 points, Brooke Yoder with
eleven, Jeslyn Zimmerly with ten, and
Amber Roth with nine.
Since the “rocky” start, the Warriors have picked up the pace, scoring
many points in their last few wins.
Carpenter says that the team is very
fast paced and their team is suited
for the up tempo style of play. With
only two returning seniors, the lack of
varsity experience can’t be mentioned
enough. Carpenter complimented the
two young guards heavily (Brooke
Yoder and Amber Roth) but says she
didn’t expect the varsity experience to
matter so much. “It surprises me that
varsity experience is that much more
of a factor than you think,” she said.
As the season goes on, the better
and more experienced the team will
get. Sectionals is beginning to be the
Warriors’ main focus point for later in
the season since it hasn’t gone exactly
