varsity level. We are one of the tallest
teams Westview has had and we are
young and a little inexperienced, but
we are learning to play and it’ll be a fun
season,” said Judah Zickafoose.
This could indeed be a fun season
if the Warriors keep improving like
Coach Rob Yoder intends. “We’re a
team with little experience and our
first two games we showed that. But
now we got guys making plays and
playing with confidence,” said Brant
Yoder. “The more games we play, the
stronger we’re going to get.” That is
true also because the team is getting
back junior Kyle Miller from suspension for the Lakeland game on December 22nd. His offensive game will bring
a much needed aspect to the team.
There’s no telling how far the
Warriors can go now that they are all
starting to believe that they can win
every time they step onto the floor.
When asked how far the Warriors can
go, Brant Yoder responded with, “as far
as we can possibly go.”
Westview Wrestling
The wrestling season is now in
full swing. For the wrestlers on the
Westview team, they are enjoying the
season. However, it’s not going exactly
as planned. The team has athletes with
the ability to compete at a high level,
but there are just not enough.
“We are lacking in numbers and
the forfeits have cost us meets we
could have won,” said junior Brian Mullett. Mullett went to semi-state last
season and is hoping to take it farther
this year. Although he is frustrated so
far this season because he has lost a
couple of matches he knows he could
have won according to him.
“To be honest, this season has not
lived up to my expectations of us,” said
Mullett. “We’ve suffered some early
season losses that we should have won.
Our teams record isn’t really reflecting
our record right now.”
The team moral is not suffering
though. “Just because we haven’t done
as well as we would have liked doesn’t
mean we’re going to give up any. We
know we just have to keep fighting,”
said Mullett. Wrestling is as much of
an individual sport as it is team, but
when the team is supporting you, it
makes it that much more fun and overall better to compete.
“Wrestling isn’t always fun,” said
junior Tony Steglich. “But the fun thing
about wrestling is all the guys that you
get to compete with. It helps a lot when
you have guys like Brian [Mullett] and
Austin [Lewton] who you know have
got your back. That goes for coach
Pippenger, too. He is always teaching
us new techniques to make us better.
He really motivates us all. And you
definitely don’t want to disappoint Mr.
Pippenger,” said Steglich.
The wrestling team has a lot to be
focused on in the coming month and
a half. In three consecutive weeks,
the Warriors will be competing in the
Westview Super Dual on January 14th,
The North East Corner Conference
meet on January 21st, and the sectional meet on January 28th.
The Warriors have quite a few
wrestlers that could make it into the
post-season and they have a while to
improve until their big chance comes.
This means that you could see quite a
few Warriors heading to Fort Wayne to
compete in the Coliseum.
