Furnace And A-Frame Condensation
This article will focus on the heating and cooling
unit in the home that keeps us comfortable if it works
correctly. With running a high efficiency furnace
comes condensation, either when running A/C in warm
weather or heating in cold weather. You will find that
in most cases the drainage pipe is integrated for the
exhaust from the furnace vent and the A-frame of the
cooling coil. Dust from the cooling A-frame that has
gotten past the filtering system and debris from the
intake and exhaust system of the furnace can become
an obstruction in the drainage system established to

remove moisture from the unit.
When the drain becomes plugged or restricted
enough in the cooling months, the tray under the
A-frame area will overflow and run water into the
furnace and ductwork, or just the ductwork if the
furnace is above the A-frame. In the heating months,
the restricted acidic condensation will either make
the furnace fail to function or cause metal to rust,
and etch concrete if it gets in contact with the acidic
moisture. Circuit board failure is also common if
moisture is introduced in any form on the board itself.
An easy check to see if the drainage system is working
correctly, would be to visually inspect the drain exit
for condensation when the unit has been running for
a few hours in either the cooling or heating season.
