This fills two things in nicely for me. First, I get a garage. Second, they both have summer jobs! The first task was to dig the footer. That involved shovels, a pick and an axe … plus lots of elbow grease. It took them about a week to dig the 24 by 24 perimeter three feet deep. The next step was to order cement to pour the twelve inch deep footer. That took about four and a half cubic yards of concrete. I had the kids mix the mortar by hand in the wheelbarrow and carry the heavy blocks to me. I finished laying up the corners and then let them lay the rest of the blocks in that 90 degree heat we had that whole week! They also used the little tool to smooth out the mortar seams between the blocks. Then we needed to back fill. The garage is on a slope with the front at the high end. That means lots of sand … sixteen cubic yards of it the first time. That makes a huge pile of sand … especially when it gets shoveled into the garage by hand. Fortunately there were seven of us to help with that job: me and the six children! That was still less than enough so we had to get another five yards! This afternoon we will be pouring the floor! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------Between her summer job (above) and musical practice every evening, Melissa didn't have time to get the word search done this time.
