During some stages of the construction, this section
will be restricted to one lane and under the direction

The America in Bloom judges visited Shipshewana
for this year’s beautification contest on July 19 -21, 2011.
As many of you know, America in Bloom is a national
organization that promotes community improvements
with an emphasis on flower and tree plantings. This year
is the town’s third attempt to win the Best Community
award in our population class. A pair of specially trained
judges spent two days visiting Shipshewana, conducting
extensive site tours, interviews with town representatives
and meeting with community volunteers. Results of
the America in Bloom contest will be made known at
the annual convention this fall in Washington, DC.
The town of Shipshewana will be preparing a
Downtown Revitalization Plan over the next several
months. The goals of the project are to determine ways
to help stimulate additional interest in the downtown,
improve aesthetics, seek ways to link the downtown
and flea market to encourage visitors to shop in both
areas, and generally look to make Shipshewana a
better place to live and visit. The town has received
a grant and hired a consultant to assist, under the
guidance of a committee comprised of town residents,
elected officials, and staff. An important component
to assist in meeting the project goals is involvement
and participation by the public. There will be several
opportunities to provide input, with the first being a
Project Kick-Off Meeting on Thursday, August 4, 2011.
